- Słowik jest małym, burym ptaszkiem mieszkającym w gałęziach drzew nad wodą, który potrafi przepięknie śpiewać. Uważa się za poddanego chińskiego cesarza, czego dowodzi fakt, że chętnie poleciał mu śpiewać, bo „słyszał, że taka jest wola cesarza”. Jest bardzo skromny i nie pragnie bogactw, dlatego odmówił przyjęcia nagrody. Rozumiał, że dla artysty najważniejsze jest uznanie jego talentu i szczęście, jakie daje ludziom („widziałem łzy w oczach cesarza, a to jest dla mnie najdroższy skarb”). Nie pragnie jednak zaszczytów i nie walczy o uznanie, dlatego odlatuje z pałacu, gdy wszyscy zaczynają zachwycać się sztucznym ptakiem-zabawką. Słowik nie jest jednak pamiętliwy. Mimo że został wygnany z Chin, przylatuje do umierającego cesarza, gdy ten woła o muzykę. Śpiewa dla niego tak samo pięknie, jak zawsze, i tym śpiewem ocala go przed śmiercią i przywraca mu zdrowie. Potem obiecuje, że będzie go odwiedzał i śpiewał mu o wszystkim, co dzieje się w kraju. Deklaruje, że kocha cesarza, ale nie dlatego, że jest cesarzem, ale dlatego, że ma dobre serce, mówił „Kocham twe serce więcej od twej korony”.
